Utah Baseball Upsets No. 1 Oregon State, 8-7

first_img Written by FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailSALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team handed No. 1 ranked Oregon State just its third loss of the season on Thursday evening, opening a three-game series against the Beavers with an 8-7 win.Oregon State led 5-4 before Utah took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Beavers threatened late, putting two on with one out in the ninth, and although a run scored on a wild pitch, reliever Jacob Rebar got a strikeout and fly out to end the game.Key for the Utes was a season-high four double plays on the night.On the mound, Trenton Stoltz earned the victory after pitching four innings of relief, surrendering just two runs (one earned) on four hits. It was his first victory of the year. Four innings pitched is over twice as long as his previous longest outing this year. Rebar earned the save, his first of the year, after throwing the final 2/3 innings with one strikeout. Josh Tedeschi and Spencer Kevin Johnson also pitched for the Utes.Wade Gulden and Shea Kramer each had two hits for the Utes while Matt Richardson and Chris Rowan each drove in two runs. Gulden had his team-leading third triple of the year and also scored three runs.Oregon State got on the board first with a run in the top of the second inning after three hits, and a double play limited the damage. In the bottom of the second, Utah tied the game with a run of its own. Davis Delorifice and Dominic Foscalina both walked and moved over on a balk to put runners on second and third with one out and Delorifice scored on a ground out.Another double play got Utah out of the top of the fourth, and the Utes took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Gulden hit a one-out triple to right field and Foscalina was hit in the head by a pitch on a scary play that saw him leave the game. Richardson laid down a bunt and collided with the fielder on a wild play, leading to Gulden scoring the first run of the inning. Rowan drove in two runs with a double to center field.Oregon State pulled back ahead in the top of the fifth after a grand slam home run following two hits and a walk for a 5-4 lead, and took a 6-4 lead with a unearned run in the top of the sixth after a leadoff error.Utah re-took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Gulden led off the inning with a single up the middle and Kramer doubled to put two in scoring position. Rowan grounded out to send in the first run of the inning, and back-to-back RBI doubles from DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., and Oliver Dunn gave Utah a 7-6 lead.The Utes added a run in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-6 lead. Gulden drew a two-out walk and Kramer hit a ball deep into the left field corner to score Gulden all the way from first.OSU rallied in the top of the ninth with a hit batter and double into the left field corner put two runners on base with one out. Rebar survived a 13-pitch at-bat for a strikeout and although a run scored on a wild pitch, a fly out ended the game.Utah and Oregon State continue their three-game series on Friday, March 30, at 6:00 p.m. at Smith’s Ballpark.
