Anthony Davis, Lakers believe having multiple shot blockers will aid their identity

first_img Trail Blazers, Grizzlies advance to NBA play-in game; Suns, Spurs see playoff dreams dashed It’s probably a question Dwight Howard has heard a hundred times. How does a big man’s role change in an increasingly small league? Howard’s answer is pretty polished.“Well I’m 6-foot-9,” he laughed. “So I’m good.”Tell that to the rest of the NBA. Sporting a lineup with the 6-10, 255-pound Anthony Davis and another center, the Lakers are unapologetically big in a league that is more and more defined by outstanding guard play. “He wants us to be a physical team,” guard Alex Caruso said. “Anybody that comes and plays the Lakers, he wants to make sure that they know they’re playing us, and we leave a presence.”Vogel, an architect of top-level defenses in Indiana, has experience in this area. But will the twin towers lineup stand throughout the season? Against lineups that are unlikely to feature two bigs, the Lakers might be hard-pressed to guard certain opponentsRelated Articles Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error How athletes protesting the national anthem has evolved over 17 years Trail Blazers beat Grizzlies in play-in, earn first-round series with the Lakers center_img Even within the team, there are differing opinions. Veteran Jared Dudley said on media day during an appearance on Spectrum SportsNet that he believed Davis would play center during the postseason, whenever the Lakers were in “winning time.”The team leadership, however, has given every indication that they are moving forward with Davis playing the four position. It’s helped that Howard and McGee have been cited as early training camp standouts. The Lakers believe having multiple shot blockers will allow them – Davis included – to take risks they wouldn’t otherwise take.“We try to tell anybody who is guarding the ball, just be aggressive,” he said. “Because we have guys behind you who are going to protect you. So that goes for me as well. If I’m guarding the ball, I know that I have guys behind me who can block shots and also alter the offensive player’s shot.” AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREUCLA alum Kenny Clark signs four-year contract extension with PackersThere are three top-tier shot blockers on the roster: The 6-11, 265-pound Howard (2.0 career blocks per game), Anthony Davis (2.4 bpg) and 7-foot, 270-pound JaVale McGee (1.6 bpg). With Howard or McGee likely to play alongside Davis for significant minutes this season, that skill set might seem redundant on defense. But Davis pushed back on that idea.“It’s hard to score,” he said. “It’s hard to score against us in the paint. So my role doesn’t change. I just don’t have to get every blocked shot now and every rebound. We have guys that can do the same thing.”That’s the potential of a double-bigs lineup: The Lakers figure to corner the market on blocked shots and defensive rebounds with Davis and another center. Davis’ fluidity makes him better at defending power forwards than the average 6-foot-10 shot blocker, and not playing true center could help protect him from the elbows and contact that generally hit harder in the paint. That lineup is being built into the Lakers’ identity that Coach Frank Vogel has outlined, one the players are internalizing. He’s made it clear to the team that he wants to play an imposing style with their size that leaves opponents feeling bruised.
