TOUR Championship daily fantasy golf picks, sleepers, fades, strategy

first_imgEven in such a small field, I think Rickie Fowler will go overlooked at East Lake. He has modest odds at 2%, but I think the real value in Fowler is his ownership. The new scoring system has resulted in some weird prices, and I expect other underpriced golfers in Fowler’s salary range, like Dustin Johnson, to soak up far more interest. Fowler is one of the few golfers with the talent to win this week that may go for legitimately low ownership. You can do a lot worse than Fowler, and with ownership leverage at a premium, it may be worth it to pivot away from a chalky golfer like Johnson. It’s almost hard to believe Bryson DeChambeau’s price is so low. DeChambeau is undoubtedly too talented for his price, but starting ten strokes behind Justin Thomas is keeping his odds at a measly 0.5%. Still, while it’s unlikely DeChambeau wins the tournament this week, a huge performance is not out of the question. DeChambeau has won twice this year and can certainly go off and make his way up the leaderboard. At such a low price, even just finishing in the top half of the field may pay off his salary, especially considering the scoring it would take for him to do so. At the bottom of the barrel, DeChambeau may go ignored compared to more popular and more expensive bargains like Justin Rose. This may be a big mistake, as DeChambeau will give you a significant ownership and salary advantage, potentially even allowing you to pay up for a golfer like Justin ThomasAaron White graduated from Northwestern University with a B.A. in Economics. He’s being given massive odds to win at 29.4%, and he’s obviously in outstanding form coming off a win last week at the BMW Championship. What makes Thomas particularly appealing to me is that I don’t expect his ownership to be astronomically high, despite his odds and the size of the field, for one main reason: his price. The price for Thomas is steep, far higher than any other golfer, and it practically forces you to select mostly duds in the rest of your lineup just by rostering Thomas alone. This is probably the highest price ever seen for a golfer in DFS, but based on his odds, I believe it’s justified. Others will skip over Thomas due to his salary, leaving leverage and an advantage to be gained by playing the golfer with the best odds in any tournament this season. The Tour Championship features a never-before-seen format in which each golfer will start with a score relative to their FedEx Cup ranking. Although this won’t translate directly into fantasy points, the new setup drastically changes each player’s odds of winning, and therefore has a huge impact on your DFS golf contests. The field this week is only 30 golfers, which is the smallest number you’ll see in the PGA.As with any new system, there will be a ton of confusion regarding how best to approach this week in terms of DFS. In my opinion, the most important thing to remember is that the starting scores are simply a new representation of odds. Try not to speculate on whether a certain starting stroke disadvantage is too significant to overcome, or the value of one versus two strokes and so on. If instead you focus on each golfer’s odds (which are accounting for starting scores) as usual, you may be able to simplify and optimize your process at a much higher level than the field.
